Rally Car Tracking

Motorsport UK have secured funding to carry out a UK wide trial for rally car tracking across the 2020 season.  The events chosen form those that make up the British Rally Championship, Scottish Rally Championship, Welsh Rally Championship and the BTRDA.  The tracking system will be supplied by former WRC co-driver, Craig Parry through his association with world-renowned tracking company, Sporttraxx.

The GSM/GPS operated tracking units will allow officials in Rally Control to monitor the position of all competing cars and those of the safety car caravan throughout the length of the event.  Should there be an incident that requires emergency assistance, the competitor will be able to activate the ‘SOS’ alarm, alerting officials to their position and requirement for help.  It will also allow competitors to inform the organisers that they are ‘OK’ even if they are stopped on a special stage.

Tracking was one of the recommendations put to the governing body following the Fatal Accident Inquiry into the Jim Clark and Snowman rallies.  And is the only one of the 29 recommendations outstanding.  Motorsport UK have been working on finding an economical and workable system for many years and it is a huge positive for the sport to be able to trial this system through 2020.  The cost of the tracking units will be subsidised by the governing body with the cost to competitor reduced to £20 per unit, per event.  Training will be provided to the clerk of the courses of those events involved in the trial and on-event support will come from Sporttraxx whilst the event is running.

It is recognised that this step brings a safety benefit and an event management benefit to our sport.  However, it is a supplementary safety system that backs up the skill levels and experience from our thousands of marshals who ensure competitor safety every weekend during the year on a motorsport event.
